Once Upon a Time in Hollywood: A love letter to the golden era of cinema.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is one of my favorite movies in recent years, and there is a lot contributing to why. The film was released on July 26, 2019 and is Quentin Tarantino’s 9th film, meaning he has only more left to go before he retires. In a year full of remakes and reboots, big budget blockbusters and big budget sleepers, this movie provides a breath of air and a nice dosage of originality. The movie centers around a television actor and his stunt double, and them navigating through 1969’s Hollywood trying to keep up with the change of the business. It also centers around Sharon Tate and the Manson family, and the horrific murders that took place in the same year. This is one of Tarantino’s alternate history movies because the story and world is as if these characters really existed. Before we get into the review, I should mention that before watching this movie, I had never seen another Tarantino picture before. I had always heard of films Pulp Fiction and Inglorious Basterds but I never had enough interest to seek them out and finally watch them. I can proudly say that after watching this movie, I went back and watched Pulp Fiction and Inglorious Basterds, which are both excellent movies as well. Once upon a Time in Hollywood made me want to watch his other movies just because of how good it was. The standouts of the film are the chemistry between Leo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt’s characters, and the world around them. They way the set builders and other members on the team built areas of California to look exactly like they did in the 60s is incredible. The soundtrack of the movie adds to this, as every time a character gets into a car a new song is playing that makes you feel like you are suddenly in this time period now. I will admit that many months after watching this movie I still jam out to the soundtrack often. Getting back to the actors, they all play their roles perfectly. Leo’s Jake Hill and Brad’s Cliff Booth are two very different characters but have a real friendship and care for each other that is believable all the way through. Margot Robbie as Sharon Tate is also a highlight. The film doesn’t quite include her as a main character but rather just shows her living her life in Hollywood like it was any other day, which is almost a depressing reminder of what really happened, I won’t spoil the ending for you, but the movie does not end the way you may think when you start it. In conclusion, this movie is plain fun above anything else. It can be funny one moment and tense the other, always keeping you on the edge because nothing in it is predictable. If you have a little over three hours set aside and want to have a good time, this movie is perfect for you,
